Paul Sinclair and Helen von Dadelszen
September 16, 2026
In this pod I catch up with public speaking and vocal coach, Helen von Dadelszen – a Kiwi now living in Crassier, Vaud, near Geneva in Switzerland.
Helen works with professionals who want to speak with confidence and impact. Her coaching draws on psychology, theatre, singing, improv, and vocal training, along with the useful but slightly terrifying truth that simply having something important to say doesn’t automatically mean people will hear it.
Helen left NZ in the early 2000s without what she calls a “master plan”. Scotland came first, followed by Italy, where questions of language, confidence, and being understood began to shape the work she does now. After building a career in international NGOs, Helen spotted what would become her professional sweet spot – helping smart people from different cultures, languages, and sectors communicate in ways that actually land.
Helen is also the author of Courageous Action – Your Playbook for Communicating Confidently, One Small Step at a Time which is built around the idea that waiting until we feel ready can be the very thing that keeps us stuck. Our conversation touches on fear, bravery, speaking up, showing up, and the small courageous actions that help confidence catch up a few steps behind.
And yes, I shamelessly use the opportunity to ask Helen for presentation and voice tips that might help me in my maddest of hobbies – stand-up comedy.
A huge thanks to Helen for joining me on Kiwi Flees. This was a thoughtful and practical conversation about voice, confidence, courage, and the very human business of trying to be understood.
